Physiotherapy in Milton, ON

What Is A Physiotherapist?

Educated in anatomy, physiology, physical function, disease and injury, a Physiotherapist is trained to treat people of all ages who have musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological conditions. They have a detailed understanding of how the body works and are specially educated and trained to assess and improve movement and function, and to relieve pain. Physiotherapists prescribe personalized therapeutic exercises, and provide essential education about the body, what keeps it from moving well, how to restore mobility and independence, and how to avoid or prevent bodily harm.

What Does A Physiotherapist Do?
The three main components to physiotherapy include an initial assessment leading to a diagnosis, which is then followed up by subsequent treatment.

The Physiotherapist will do an in-depth assessment which consists of a subjective interview (asking relevant questions about your pain and/or injury and how it affects you) as well as an objective assessment (examining your posture, mobility, strength and performing tests that relate to your problem). This will determine the structure or structures that are affected.

Once testing is complete, then physiotherapists look at the results to determine the problems facing their patients. This can range from fairly minor issues, such as pulled or damaged muscles, to severe injuries or nerve damage that causes pain and lack of mobility. The Physiotherapist will then develop a treatment plan unique to your needs.

Treatment may include manual therapy (hands on treatment), electrical modalities (ultrasound, laser, etc.), exercises (for strengthening, posture, mobility), education (how to improve your condition and prevent re-occurrence) and/or a home program of self-management. Your Physiotherapist might also prescribe therapeutic exercises to improve range of motion, muscle strength, posture and gait. A therapeutic physiotherapy exercise program will be designed to address your individual health concerns, and may involve exercises that can be done home, or at the gym. To assist your recovery or maintain your functional independence, your physiotherapist may also prescribe assistive supportive or mobility devices, such as joint braces or crutches. The use of acupuncture is another commonly used practice to treat certain ailments.

For instance, physiotherapists' treatment covers:

  • sports injuries
  • work injuries
  • motor vehicle accident related injuries
  • arthritis
  • ligament sprains
  • muscle or tendon strains
  • tendonitis
  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • overuse injuries
  • postural problems
  • post-surgical rehabilitation
  • whiplash
  • headaches
  • multiple sclerosis
  • degenerative joint disorders
  • pre/post natal care
  • carpal tunnel syndrome

Our team will evaluate and help relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore strength, endurance and function of patients suffering from injuries, disease or disability.

For your convenience, no doctor referral is necessary! And treatments are partially or FULLY COVERED by Extended Health Care Plans, (MVA) Motor Vehicle Insurance Plans, or WSIB.
